Have you ever tried a fruit,
Tasted its tangy sweetness
And known it’s the most delicious thing in the world,
Only to taste it again another time, in another place,
And realize that the unripe one you had had before
Was only a sliver of the real flavor?
Have you ever seen a rainbow,
Gloried in its shining beauty
And known it’s the most beautiful thing in the world,
Only to see another one in a brighter sky, with more vivid colors,
And realize the faint one you had seen before
Was only a shadow of the real glory?
Have you ever climbed a high hill,
Admired its lofty height
And known it’s the most breathtaking view in the world,
Only to climb a mountain later on that’s so much taller,
And realize the short one you’d climbed before
Was only a glimpse of the real beauty?
Have you ever listened to a violin,
Marveled in its stunning melody
And known it’s the most delightful sound in the world,
Only to hear a vast orchestra in a grand theater up close,
And realize the single strain you had heard before
Was only a tiny part of the harmonious symphony?
Have you ever smelled a flower,
Inhaled its fresh fragrance
And known it’s the purest scent in the world,
Only to visit a vast garden full of diverse flowers
And realize the rose you had smelled before
Was only a fraction of the overwhelming fragrance?
Have you ever gotten sad,
Wept at the depth of sorrow
And known it’s the most horrible feeling in the world,
Only to lose the person you love best who loves you
And realize that the grief you had felt before
Was only a drop in an ocean of pain?
Have you ever been let down,
Shocked at the disappointment
And known it’s the most disorienting thing in the world,
Only to love and trust deeply, get betrayed,
And realize that the disillusionment you had before
Was only a part of the searing heartbreak?
Have you ever lost a fingernail,
Cried at the great pain
And known it’s the most miserable suffering in the world,
Only to break ten bones in your leg and foot with no pain meds
And realize that the anguish you had felt before
Was only a glimpse of the intense agony?
Have you ever fallen asleep,
Drifting from awake to unconscious
And known it’s the most peaceful thing in the world,
Only to go to bed after a day of hard work and success
And realize that the peace you had before
Was only a slice of the blissful satisfaction?
Have you ever embraced a friend,
Basked in the comfort and love
And known it’s the most delightful feeling in the world,
Only to share a long, heartfelt kiss with your beloved
And realize the feeling you had before
Was only a sliver of the great affection called love?
Have you ever looked at the stars,
Gazed at their vast arrangement
And known it’s the most dazzling thing on this earth,
Only to go out into the country where no light has been
And realize that the view you had before
Was only a murky piece of the endless array?
Have you ever gone about life,
Looking, smelling, feeling, tasting, hearing,
And known that it’s the most amazing blessing to be alive,
Only to have your heart, senses, and mind
Touched by the hand of God
And realize that the joy you had before
Was only the tiniest fraction of a reflection of a peephole
Into the abundant richness of life to come?
